 as mentioned the first drop of gary bigeni for spring/summer has made it's way through the door - yay!! and arghhhh it's amazing! tricky pattern cutting manifests itself in liquid silk jersey dresses in magenta that cowl languidly on one side, super fine knits and open jackets feature sleeves that travel continuously around the body, silk singlet dresses feature heavy metal zips on one side, and double dresses can be worn in an endless number of ways.

ah-may-zing.

boxing clever

we love boxes!! brown cardboard boxes covered with all kind of exotic paperwork, and filled with excitement from all over the globe!! yay for boxes!! in the last few days we've had our first drop from andrea crews with super clever vintage tee's pulled apart and re-constructed into voluminous tunics, fringed bolero's and tees printed with "africa is the future". 

makin jan ma's new collection "give me some deep water" features unisex striped oversized tees some featuring zips that cinch in the body and others feature another half a tee and an extra sleeve leaving fabric that can knotted or swept around like a scarf - as well as super sized zippered shirts and printed leggings.

new for spring/summer is melbourne label material by product, championed by influential blogger/film maker diane pernet, this label features stunning hand finished silk tunics with drippy ties, and printed neckpieces, and the most delicious leather jacket ever... soft, and washed down with a wool jersey lining.

geometry class

yah for big boxes! freshly hanging on our new season rack is montreal based label complex geometries, and ooooooooooh it's so cool! there's loose dresses with long ties, clever tee dresses with looped back panels that can be left voluminous or swept round the body, drapey gowns, unisex hooded tees and sweatshirts and scarves, actually it's all pretty unisex and all in the softest, washed down cotton jersey. i just wanna layer it up, and strut around in a billowing shroud of fabric... but thats just me...

spring/summer deliveries are getting into full swing and there's been some tasty little morsels of press from romance was born whetting our appetite for their new collection... a collection inspired by a grannies undersea tea party... mmmm... cream buns... lammingtons... jeez i think it's time for afternoon tea...

anyway, check out the gorgeous pic  of the 'rock lobster dress' (never fear it's on our order in both black and white!) featured in the latest australian vogue. the new collection is due in september. we'll keep you posted!

will(helm) power!

yahhhh!! just through the door is a big ole' box of insanity from bernhard willhelm's new northern hemisphere winter collection, and it's freakin' awesome!! unisex, oversized tee's are emblazoned with "i'm a pretty good person" and dripping graffitied smiley faces, cotton dresses feature 3 types of checks cleverly panelled together, a stunning black dress with a lurex stripe billows around the body with intricate tucks and gathers, and super cool bright silk dresses that drip and drape around the body. ah-may-zing!

i cant find a video of this show from paris, but here is a super cute interview with diane pernet from back in the day where he concocts her a meal from tulle, and polka dots and explains to her how he knows everyone that buys his pieces - i think this childlike wonderment and his tactile approach to creating clothes is still very apparent in his work. genius.

in the projects

after obsessively keeping an eye out for any boxes that seemed to be coming towards our shop for what felt like weeks, new york based label salvor projects is finally here! and i think i'm in love... beautiful drapey hand printed modal (the softest, slinkiest knit in the world...!) is panelled cleverly into slinky tunics and dresses, huge photo like scarves are breathtaking when wrapped around the body, but because of the fine knit become beautiful textures when gathered up. and the boots!! ahhhhhhh the boots. I am writing this with my new salvor work boots on, and jeeeeez i'm feeling pretty flash right now.  

salvor projects is stocked in such boutiques as dover street market in london and japan , seven new york and barneys in new york and we are the only stockists in the southern hemisphere...

concept/motivation behind new collection: err..a bit of a jumble...monica vitti on a sad rocky beautiful island, latitude zero a place under the sea with doomed flying lions, boetti's tapestry of the worlds 1000 longest rivers...these all appear somewhere in the prints for fw09 somehow coming together into a story.
 
the ultimate salvor project lady or gent is: jodorowsky meets kamen rider meets the index (you can see something on them, their music here...not much out there)
 
what do you know about new zealand?  that any place that could produce the clean and the gordons (along with the rest of flying nun,etc..) is worth trying to get to someday...

yah! the first delivery for summer is always exciting a) because it's new! b) because it means better weather is on it's way!! and first through the door for summer is the first drop from auckland based label deadly ponies. i could wax lyrical for many paragraphs about how cool their bags are, how incredibly supple and beautiful the leather is, how quirky they are, how much i want EVERYTHING... but, uh, well, i guess i don't need to now...

we love a good collaboration, and we are also huge fans of jak & jil blog - you'll find us most mornings drooling over our keyboard at their images of the most sartorially gifted people in the world often rocking the most inspirational/sexy/precarious heels around. so we were more than a little excited to see jak & jil collaborate with one of our new additions for next season complex geometries (we have several new labels which we will reveal in the lead up to next season - stay tuned!)

complex geometries signature is clever, sculptural plays on basics such as singlets and tees with tricksy pattern cutting and super clever drape and is stocked in some of the worlds best boutiques including browns focus in london and reborn in montreal.

aussie fashion week - the year of the shoulder

swine flu jokes, balmain inspired shoulders, slipping and/or falling in precarious heels, leggings as pants (mostly by attendees at the shows not so much on the catwalk), twittering front rowers, boys wearing spray on jeans and deep v necks revealing waxed and spray tanned chests, and uh, did i mention shoulders?

luckily for us our labels are a little more 'left of centre' than all that, and i may be biased but i think romance was born, tv, and gary bigeni produced the strongest collections of the week - leaving behind obvious trends and any notion of the dreaded 'recession' dressing.

romance was born

an under the sea granny's tea party was the inspiration behind the madness that ensued at romance was born. a tea party that included oysters (printed on silk satin and georgette), clams (inspiring clam shaped panelling on dresses) and an array of pastries (one girl literally wearing a lamington??). girls seductively wriggled and writhed on the catwalk ending up being part of a huge tableaux in front of an incredible floral centre piece with neptune plucking away at a harp. it was uplifting, eccentric, and suprisingly wearable and not a balmain marching jacket in sight. favourite look? the pamela anderson meets lady bunny mermaid girl. what recession? swine flu? never heard of it.

shoulder emphasis rating = 4/10, shoulder pads were evident, but they are used externally, and in some pieces used to pad hips, or dyed to create mollusc like shapes.

tv

tv's collection 'army dreamers' boomed into life with bob marleys buffalo soldier, with girls stomping down the catwalk in punched suede dresses, a sexy jungle print, and pieces with utilitarian closures such as knots, twists and ties. it felt a little 80's (with coloured denims, and tapered pleat front pants) a little glamourous (with floor length jersey gowns) but all with a deliberately off-kilter tv vibe.

my favourites were the supersized perforated kaftan, geometric knits, and jersey dresses. 

shoulder emphasis rating = 5/10, there were shoulder pads giving some jackets and dresses an authentic power dressing look, but they are removable.

gary bigeni

ok, so my catwalk photo's of the gary bigeni show sucked, but i'm not vogue.com.au ok?? gary's show was a concise meditation on drape, volume and form, zips allowed garments to split apart, giving a harder geometric element to the organic shapes he's known for. there's still the tricky pattern cutting where dresses snake around the body with few seams, but there's an ease to the whole look. favourites? long line silk georgette pieces with side zips, a knit jumper with joined arms with tiny rib holes on the elbow for your arms, and some killer draped one seam black dresses. super clever stuff!! but when is he going to do men's wear?? i want one of those joined sleeve jumpers!!

shoulder emphasis rating = 0/10, not a shoulder pad in sight
